Symington is a printed sprig on cotton, a small branching motif repeated in ordered rows, drawn with a fine line and a little shading so that it holds up close to. It is the largest of the House Small Prints designs, though still modest, and it has enough structure to work as the main pattern in a small room rather than only as a support. The rows are set square, so the design has an order to it that suits a formal room.
One hundred per cent cotton, 137 centimetres wide, repeating 25 centimetres vertically and 19.5 centimetres horizontally. GP & J Baker list it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Six colourways: Blue, Teal/Red, Soft Red, Ochre/Blue, Green/Red and Sand. Sand is the neutral and Blue the easiest to place, while Teal/Red and Green/Red bring a second colour into a scheme without your needing another cloth to do it.
We use it for curtains in a bedroom or a small sitting room, for loose covers on an armchair, and for headboards where the rows can be centred. It also makes a good blind in a study. Pair it with a stripe from the Symington Stripes book and a plain linen. It also suits a bed valance and a pair of lampshades. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Allow a full repeat per drop and match the rows at every seam so the sprigs stay level. On a headboard, centre the pattern on the bed's centre line before cutting; on loose covers, ask your upholsterer to align the rows across the seat and the inside back. Interline full-length curtains so the cloth hangs with weight.
