Tall Trees is Kit Kemp's landscape paper for GP & J Baker, drawn as a single tall scene rather than a repeating motif. The vertical repeat is 300 centimetres, which in most houses means the design runs from skirting to cornice without ever coming round again, so a papered wall reads as one continuous drawing of a wood.
The ground is 100 per cent non-woven, 70 centimetres wide, with that 300 centimetre vertical repeat. Four colourways: Soft Green, Delft Blue, Sunset and Sepia. Soft Green is the most naturalistic and the easiest to live with; Delft Blue turns the wood into something closer to a china pattern; Sunset warms the whole scene; Sepia takes the colour out altogether and behaves almost like a tinted etching.
We use scenic papers on the wall you face when you come into a room, behind a bed, along a stair well, across the end of a wide hall. Keep everything else plain: a linen curtain, a wool rug, painted woodwork in a tone lifted from the trunks rather than the leaves. It is also the right paper for a windowless room, where a drawn landscape gives the eye somewhere to go, and for the inside of a wide double-door cupboard that is opened every morning. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Set this one out on paper before you set it out on the wall. Each drop has to begin at the same point in the scene, so a 10 metre roll gives three drops at a 2.5 metre ceiling and a 4 metre wall takes two rolls; taller rooms will take fewer drops per roll, so measure the height first. Paste the wall, hang in roll order, and order one batch for the whole job.
