GP & J Baker | Tamar

Tamar is named for the river that divides Devon and Cornwall, and it is the lightest, most fluid of the Artisan II weaves, an even blend of viscose and linen in equal parts that gives the cloth good drape alongside its texture. The 33 centimetre horizontal repeat is close enough to read as a fine grain rather than a pattern, and of all the Artisan designs it is the one that hangs most like a plain, softly draped linen, with none of the coarser hand a jute or acrylic blend can bring.

Composition is 50 per cent viscose and 50 per cent linen. It is 132 centimetres wide, with a 33 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains. There is one colourway, Aqua, a clear blue-green that reads fresh rather than heavy.

We use Tamar for curtains in a room that wants a lighter hand than linen alone would give, a coastal house or a bathroom-adjacent bedroom in particular, where the colour and the drape both suit the setting. It also makes a good roman blind, and gathered generously it gives a simple café curtain real softness rather than a stiff, flat fall. Pair it with white, pale oak or a plain cream. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The fine repeat wastes very little cloth; standard drop calculations are enough without a full extra repeat. Line curtains for a good fall; the added viscose gives Tamar more natural drape than a pure linen, so it hangs particularly well. There is no published rub count, so keep it to curtains and blinds, and ask your supplier for current test data before any firmer use.
