Tansy takes its name from the small, button-headed yellow flower long found in English cottage gardens, and belongs to GP & J Baker's House Small Prints collection, the House's line of neat, all-over florals sized to work as a supporting cloth rather than a statement one. It is printed at a neat 21 by 19.4 centimetre scale on a pure cotton ground, and the crisp cotton hand suits a print of this density, the flower head small enough to settle into an even, all-over texture rather than a bloom you would centre deliberately on a piece.
The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 136 centimetres wide, with a 21 centimetre vertical and 19.4 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and upholstery. Seven colourways in all; Linen, Blue, Green and Ochre are the four we turn to most, running from a quiet, soft neutral to a warm, mustard-toned yellow that suits a country kitchen.
We use it for curtains in a kitchen or garden room, where the tansy's cheerful character suits the setting, and it covers a chair or window seat well. Pair Linen or Blue with a calm, contemporary scheme, and Ochre where the room wants a note of colour and warmth against plain walls.
