Tetbury Stripe is the stripe in House Small Prints II, and it is a drawn stripe rather than a printed rule: the edges are soft, the widths vary slightly and there is a 13 centimetre vertical repeat in the figure that runs within it. That is what stops it looking like ticking. On a wall it does the thing stripes do best, which is lift the ceiling, and it does it without the hard, formal quality of a two-colour regency stripe.
The ground is 100 per cent non-woven, printed 52 centimetres wide, with a 13 centimetre vertical repeat. Seven colourways: Indigo, Aqua, Soft Red, Ochre, Leaf Green, Sand and Teal. Sand is the quiet one and will read as a texture. Indigo and Teal are the two with real depth and make the best job of a tall room. Leaf Green and Ochre suit a country interior, and Aqua and Soft Red are the lighter options for a bedroom or a bathroom.
Stripes earn their keep in halls, stairwells and low-ceilinged bedrooms, and we use them above panelling where the vertical line and the horizontal rail work against each other nicely. It is also a good paper behind a bedhead, run across the chimney breast alone. Keep the curtains plain and pick the paint from the palest tone in the stripe. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Paste the wall and hang dry. Stripes are unforgiving of a wall that is out of plumb, so set the first drop against a plumb line struck 50 centimetres from the corner and work both ways from there. Allow an extra repeat per drop. A four metre wall at 2.6 metres high needs eight drops, which is three rolls at the usual 10 metres. Check the batch numbers, because a stripe shows a colour shift between rolls immediately.
