GP & J Baker | Therapia

Therapia is one of five designs in the East to West collection, each named for a staging post on the old overland trade routes between Europe and Asia. The pattern is woven into the linen-viscose cloth itself, in a single indigo tone, so it reads as texture that catches the light rather than a print sitting on the surface. The repeat is generous and slow to unfold, the kind of scale that rewards a proper width of curtain rather than a narrow one.

Composition is 90 per cent linen and 10 per cent viscose, giving a dry, good-bodied cloth with a little sheen where the weave catches light. It is 126 centimetres wide, with a 78 centimetre vertical and 63 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains. There is one colourway, Indigo, a deep warm blue that reads close to navy indoors and opens up in daylight.

We use Therapia for a pair of full-length curtains in a study or a sitting room, where the weave has room to read properly and the indigo holds its own against timber and leather. It also makes a good window seat cushion, or a run of curtains against a dark, panelled wall, where the tonal weave adds depth without competing pattern. Pair it with a plain linen in a paler blue or warm cream. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow one repeat per drop when costing curtains, and ask your maker to keep the pattern centred at the leading edge. Line the curtains properly; a woven texture like this hangs better with a full lining behind it. There is no published rub count for Therapia, so we treat it as a curtain and soft-furnishing weave rather than a candidate for a hard-used seat.
