GP & J Baker | Thornham

Thornham belongs to Artisan II, GP & J Baker's collection of textural, craft-influenced designs, and it takes an even finer, more textural motif than its stablemate Veryan, set out in a tiny 8 by 5 centimetre repeat on a linen-rich cotton ground. At that scale the pattern reads almost entirely as texture, giving the cloth a quiet, tactile presence rather than a graphic one.

The cloth is 52 per cent linen and 48 per cent cotton, and it is 135 centimetres wide, with an 8 centimetre vertical and 5 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated at 20,000 rubs on the Martindale test, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads, though we would recommend checking current rub test data with us before specifying it for the heaviest upholstery use. Three colourways: Warm Grey, a soft neutral; Indigo, a deep classic blue; and Spice, a warm burnt orange.

We use it for curtains in a room that wants texture without pattern, and for a chair or a section of a sofa where a quiet, tactile cloth suits the scheme better than a bold print. Warm Grey is the easiest choice across a large piece; Indigo and Spice bring a little more colour to a smaller chair or a set of cushions. Pair it with Veryan, its companion in the same collection, for a layered but coherent scheme. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see the texture and colour in your own light.

With such a fine repeat, pattern matching is largely forgiving, though it is still worth allowing a little extra for cutting and matching.
