GP & J Baker | Tiger Tiger

Tiger Tiger belongs to East To West, GP & J Baker's collection of globally inspired prints, and it takes a graphic tiger motif and sets it out in a 32 by 46 centimetre repeat on a soft cotton-viscose ground. It is one of the more overtly pictorial designs in the collection, with a confident, illustrative quality rather than the abstracted or textural patterns found elsewhere in the range.

The cloth is 55 per cent viscose and 45 per cent cotton, and it is 138 centimetres wide, with a 32 centimetre vertical and 46 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated at 50,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery as well as curtains. GP & J Baker specify it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There is one colourway, White, a crisp, pale ground that keeps the tiger motif graphic and legible rather than heavy.

We use it for curtains in a room that wants a genuine talking point, and the Martindale rating means it also covers a chair or a section of a sofa for a bolder, upholstered take on the print. It works particularly well in a room with plenty of plain surfaces to set the motif off, and as a single statement cushion on an otherwise quiet sofa. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see the scale and colour in your own light.

Allow one full repeat per drop and match carefully across widths so the tiger motif aligns at the seams, particularly on a large panel such as a sofa back. Line and interline curtains, and press from the reverse to protect the print. For upholstery, ask your maker about railroading and centring the motif before cutting into an expensive run of cloth.
