GP & J Baker | Tigris

Tigris is the small all-over in GP & J Baker's Eldon collection: a tight drawn repeat, 17 centimetres up and only 7.2 centimetres across, that reads as a worked texture from any real distance. Printed on a viscose and linen ground, it has the softness of the collection's larger prints without any of their scale, which makes it the easiest of them to place. Nothing in the drawing is large enough to be cut awkwardly, which is why small all-overs like this survive being used on complicated shapes.

It is 82 per cent viscose and 18 per cent linen, 137 centimetres wide, with a 17 centimetre vertical and 7.2 centimetre horizontal repeat. Abrasion is tested at 20,000 rubs on the Martindale scale. GP & J Baker list it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Four colourways: Emerald/Blue, Blue, Sage/Plaster and Red/Ochre. Sage/Plaster is the quietest; Red/Ochre the warmest; Blue and Emerald/Blue the strongest.

Small repeats go where larger ones cannot. We use this for Roman blinds in reveals, for loose covers on small chairs, for the inside of a curtain, and for lampshades where a big design would be cut through. It also lines a fitted cupboard well. We would also use it as the contrast on the outside of a pelmet, or on the reverse of a bedspread whose face is one of the collection's larger prints. With a 7.2 centimetre horizontal repeat there are nineteen repeats across the cloth, so joins are effectively invisible and almost nothing is wasted. Allow 17 centimetres per drop for matching. On upholstery the design is directional, so run it the same way on every panel and check the seat and inside back agree before the covers are fixed.
