Tilly is the finest-scale print in GP & J Baker's House Small Prints collection, a tiny fleck worked at just 2 by 8.5 centimetres on a pure cotton ground, so small that it reads as an even, granular texture rather than a print with a visible motif you could point to. It is the print we reach for where a scheme wants the effect of a plain with a little more depth and interest up close than a true plain would give, without any risk of it competing with a bolder pattern elsewhere in the room.
The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 136 centimetres wide, with a 2 centimetre vertical and 8.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and upholstery. Eight colourways in all; Parchment, Blue, Green and Ochre are the four we turn to most, running from a quiet, warm neutral to a clear blue and a warm, mustard-toned yellow.
We use it for curtains where a near-plain texture suits the room better than a print, and it covers a chair or window seat well, since the tiny scale reads cleanly at any distance and never looks busy up close. Pick Parchment for a quiet neutral scheme, or Blue or Green where the room wants a little more colour without adding a second pattern. Because the repeat is so fine, matching is straightforward and wastes very little fabric; allow the usual seam allowance rather than a full repeat per drop when you plan quantities. Line curtains as standard, and interline for a south-facing window to protect the printed colour; for upholstery, this small a scale is forgiving of pattern placement across the main panels of a finished piece.
