Tim's Rug takes the banded structure of a flatweave rug and builds it into furnishing cloth: bands of colour running the length, broken by finer lines, with jute doing most of the work in the surface. It is the heaviest-textured of Kit Kemp's stripes for GP & J Baker, and it reads as much as a texture as a pattern. The hand is dry and substantial.
Sixty per cent jute with 40 per cent cotton, woven 139 centimetres wide, with a horizontal repeat of 17.3 centimetres and no vertical repeat, so nothing is lost on the drop. It is listed for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Three colourways: Indigo/Chocolate, Clementine/Green and Jewel. Indigo/Chocolate is the one we use for seating, while Jewel puts several strong colours into the banding and is better kept to cushions or a single chair.
We use it for ottomans and bench seats, for cushions where the bands can be centred, and for simple unlined curtains in a garden room. It is sturdy enough for a window seat that gets daily use. Pair it with a plain cotton and one of the smaller prints rather than a second stripe. In a hallway it stands up to bags and coats better than most decorative cloths. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Decide which band sits at the centre of a seat or a cushion before cutting, and keep that choice consistent across a set. Because the repeat runs across the width only, railroading is worth considering on a long bench: it turns the bands to run along the seat and avoids a seam. Jute blends relax in use, so upholster firmly.
