GP & J Baker | Tip Toe

Tip Toe is a woven stripe with a broken, stepped edge to each band, so the lines never quite settle and the effect is closer to a hand-loomed rug than a formal ticking. Cotton and jute in almost equal measure give it a substantial, dry handle, and the small amount of polyester steadies the weave. It is the boldest of Kit Kemp's stripes for GP & J Baker.

Fifty per cent cotton, 48 per cent jute and 2 per cent polyester, woven 134 centimetres wide with a horizontal repeat of 33.5 centimetres and no vertical repeat. GP & J Baker list it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Five colourways: Indigo/Chocolate, Jewel, Crimson/Blue, Earth/Indigo and Teal/Spice. All of them carry two colours or more, so this is a cloth that brings its own palette rather than following one already in the room.

We use it for ottomans, bench seats and cushions, and for curtains in a room that can take a strong stripe. It also works on the outside back of a chair with a plain on the front. Keep the rest of the scheme quiet: a plain linen, a textured weave, and nothing else patterned. On a stool or a small footstool it becomes the whole point of the piece. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

There is no vertical repeat, so the only wastage is in matching the bands at the seams, which does need doing, as an unmatched stripe on a wide curtain is obvious. Decide the band placement on the leading edge first. For a long bench, railroading turns the stripe across the seat and removes the join altogether.
