GP & J Baker | Tissington

Tissington is a large-scale botanical embroidery of garden flowers stitched in two colours across a linen-cotton ground. The drawing is full and open at once, with big flower heads and space between them, and the viscose thread gives the blooms a soft sheen against the matte cloth. With a 78 centimetre vertical repeat it is a design for a big window or a bed rather than a small blind. It is the design in Winslow that most resembles a painted botanical rather than a stitched one.

The composition is 42 per cent linen, 40 per cent cotton and 18 per cent viscose, the viscose being the embroidery thread. It is 130 centimetres wide with a 78 centimetre vertical and 65 centimetre horizontal repeat, and it is specified for curtains and bedspreads. One colourway, Teal/Coral, a blue-green and a warm coral on natural, which is one of the freshest pairings in the collection and suits a bedroom or a garden room.

We use it for full-length curtains in a bedroom, for a bedspread, and as a headboard fabric where a flower can be centred. A pair of cushions on a plain teal sofa works too. Pair with plain linens in teal and Pavilion in Aqua on a chair. In a garden room it makes a good single panel behind a sofa, where the flowers can be seen flat. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow a full 78 centimetre repeat per drop and plan so a complete flower head sits near the top of the curtain; match across widths. Line and interline, and press from the reverse over a soft cloth. It is not rated for upholstery. A headboard wants a firm interlining so the stitch stays taut.
