GP & J Baker | Tradewind

Tradewind is a small woven geometric in cotton and jute, with a repeating diamond and line structure built into the weave rather than printed on it, so the pattern has depth and a slightly raised surface. The jute gives it a dry hand and a matt finish. At a few paces it reads as a textured plain, which is what makes it so useful across a whole room.

Seventy-five per cent cotton with 25 per cent jute, 137 centimetres wide, repeating 10 centimetres vertically and 12.4 centimetres horizontally, small enough to place without thought. It is tested to 25,000 rubs on the Martindale scale and listed for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Six colourways: Chocolate, Parchment, Sky Blue, Red/Green, Teal and Blue/Green. Parchment and Chocolate are the workhorses, while Teal and Blue/Green carry more colour than a small cutting suggests.

We use it for dining chairs, loose covers and headboards, and it makes an honest pair of curtains in a room where the walls are doing the talking. It is also a good cushion cloth against a larger print. Pair it with Kit Kemp's prints from the same collection, or with a plain velvet. It is also the cloth we use on a fitted bench in a boot room, where a plain would show every mark. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The small repeat keeps cutting simple: allow a repeat per drop and match at the seams so the diamonds line up across the join. On seat pads, centre the motif on the front edge. Woven geometrics show a crooked line more than prints do, so ask your upholsterer to keep the weft square as the cloth is pulled.
