Trebizond is named for the old Black Sea trading city, and it is the plainest-fibred of the East to West designs: a 100 per cent linen weave with a 39 by 42 centimetre repeat, close to square, which gives the pattern an even, balanced presence on a wall of curtain. Being pure linen it has the dry, slightly irregular hand the fibre is known for, with none of the added sheen the viscose-blend weaves in the group carry.

Composition is 100 per cent linen, which gives the truest linen hand in the East to West range: dry, matte and with a natural, slightly uneven surface. It is 126 centimetres wide, with a 39 centimetre vertical and 42 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains. There is one colourway, Teal, a deep blue-green that reads calm rather than bright.

We use Trebizond for curtains in a bedroom or sitting room where a true linen hand matters more than performance, and its near-square repeat makes it an easy fabric to centre on a pair of windows of different widths. It also suits a simple pair of unlined café curtains in a kitchen. Pair it with a warm cream wool or a plain linen in the same teal. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Pure linen weaves relax and soften with wear, so line and interline curtains to help them keep their shape and to protect the fibre from strong sun. Allow one repeat per drop; the near-square repeat makes centring on a window straightforward. There is no published rub count, so treat this as a curtain weight rather than an upholstery cloth, and expect the colour to mellow gently over the years, which is part of the appeal of a pure linen weave.
