Weekend Linen is another plain, 100 per cent linen cloth in the Crayford family, named for the relaxed, practical character the house gives its everyday linens rather than for any particular pattern or print. It shares Newport's tightly woven, matt hand, and the two are effectively companion plains within the same book, chosen here for a slightly warmer, more autumnal palette than Newport offers.
The composition is 100 per cent linen, and the cloth is 137 centimetres wide; no repeat is stated, since a plain has none to give. GP & J Baker tested it to 35,000 Martindale rubs, which is rated for upholstery, and specify it for curtains and both loose and fixed upholstery. There are two colourways, Caramel and Olive, a warm mid-brown and a muted, grounded green that both wear well over time and against most existing flooring.
We would use Caramel on a sofa or armchair in a scheme built around warm wood and brass, and Olive where the room wants a quieter, more garden-toned neutral instead of a stronger colour statement. Both pair naturally with a stronger print from the same collection, taking the role a plain always plays alongside a pattern elsewhere in the room. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
As a plain with no repeat, cutting and matching are straightforward; railroad a wide sofa run where possible to avoid a seam across the main panel and keep the surface reading as one continuous piece. Line curtains as standard, and note that pure linen will crease more readily than a blended cloth, which is part of its relaxed character rather than a fault to correct.
