Colour

Winterton is a large-scale botanical embroidery on linen, with full flower heads and foliage stitched in two colours over a natural ground. The polyester and viscose threads give the stitching a mix of matte and sheen, so the flowers have depth, and the 78 centimetre repeat gives them room to breathe. It is one of the fullest designs in Winslow and the one we would choose for a big window. It suits a room that wants weight and warmth rather than airiness.

The composition is 62 per cent linen, 23 per cent polyester and 15 per cent viscose, the last two being the embroidery threads. It is 134 centimetres wide with a 78 centimetre vertical and 67 centimetre horizontal repeat, and it is specified for curtains and bedspreads. One colourway, Red/Green, a soft red and a deep green that read as warm rather than seasonal and sit well with cream walls and dark timber.

We use it for curtains in a dining room or a country sitting room, for a bedspread, and for a pair of large cushions on a plain sofa. Pair with plain linens in green and a small geometric embroidery on a chair. In a hall or a study it works as a single wall panel behind a desk, where the stitch can be seen close to. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow a full 78 centimetre repeat per drop and plan so a complete flower head sits near the top of the curtain; the stitching is dense and heavy, so interline and use a strong heading tape. Press from the reverse over a soft cloth. It is not rated for seating. A bedspread wants a light interlining so the stitching does not dimple.
