Wriggle Room is a Kit Kemp design for GP & J Baker: a close, all-over field of drawn squiggles that never quite line up. The 19 centimetre vertical repeat is small, so the eye reads movement rather than motif, and the wall ends up with a slight shimmer to it. It is the sort of paper that makes a plain room feel considered without asking anyone to look at it directly.
It is printed on a 100 per cent non-woven ground, 70 centimetres wide, with that 19 centimetre vertical repeat. Five colourways: Sage, Ochre, Green/Pink, Blue/Yellow and Teal/Spice. The single-word colourings are the calm ones and will take a room on their own; the paired colourings carry a second tone through the drawing and are worth picking up in a cushion or a lampshade rather than matching exactly.
We use small repeats like this where a wall is broken up: a landing with doors on three sides, a study lined with shelves, a bathroom where the paper only shows in strips. It hangs well above a painted dado, and it sits happily behind framed prints, which a larger design rarely does. Because the drawing has no obvious top or bottom, it also takes awkward corners and sloping ceilings better than a directional design, which matters in an attic room or a converted roof space. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Hang it by pasting the wall. With a repeat this short there is almost no waste, and at a 2.5 metre ceiling a 10 metre roll gives three comfortable drops, so a standard 4 metre wall needs two rolls. Reverse alternate lengths only if the roll label tells you to, check the match before the first drop goes up, and keep every roll from the same batch.
