York Weave shares its fibre blend and colourway with Palace Weave from the same Royal Weaves group, but where Palace Weave is a flat plain, York Weave carries a very fine 2 centimetre repeat that gives the surface a light, textured grain rather than a perfectly smooth face. Held at arm's length the two are close cousins; up close, York Weave has more life in it, the fine texture catching light in a way a true plain cannot.
The composition is 45 per cent viscose, 35 per cent cotton, 16 per cent linen and 4 per cent polyester. It is 137 centimetres wide, with a 2 centimetre vertical and 2 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker tested it to 26,000 Martindale rubs, specifying it for curtains and upholstery. There is one colourway, Sapphire, the same deep true blue as its sister weave.
We use it for curtains and occasional upholstery in the same way as Palace Weave, and the two can be used together in one room, the flatter cloth on a large piece and the textured one on a smaller chair, to give a scheme some quiet variation without introducing a second colour or breaking from the Sapphire palette running through the room. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
The fine repeat wastes little fabric and rarely needs careful matching, though it is worth keeping the grain running the same way across a large piece. Line curtains for a good fall; for upholstery, keep it to lightly used pieces given the 26,000 rub count, and check dye lots across a larger order before cutting begins on the full quantity.
