GP & J Baker | Zaraband Texture

Zaraband Texture takes the ground of the Eldon collection's Zaraband design and prints it on its own, without the main figure. What is left is an all-over worked surface, close, irregular and drawn by hand, that behaves as a textured plain from any distance. It is printed on viscose and linen, soft and dry, with the same fluid drape as its parent design.

The cloth is 82 per cent viscose and 18 per cent linen, 137 centimetres wide, with a 36 centimetre vertical and 68.5 centimetre horizontal repeat. Abrasion is tested at 20,000 rubs on the Martindale scale. GP & J Baker list it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Two colourways: Teal/Spice, which holds a warm and a cool tone against each other, and Denim, which is the quieter and more usable of the two.

This is the cloth you put next to the pattern. We use it for the plain curtain in a room where the blind is figured, for the outside back and arms of a chair whose front is a print, and for cushions that need to sit between two stronger fabrics. Two lengths of this made into a pair of full-length curtains will hold a room together when everything else in it is figured, and it costs the room nothing in liveliness. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Although it reads as a texture it is a print with a proper repeat, so treat it as one: allow 36 centimetres per drop for matching and plan seams at the half-width so the two repeats across the cloth stay balanced. On upholstery, run the design the same way on every panel, because the irregularity is directional and shows if a piece is turned.
