Kirkby Design | Fold

Fold is drawn, not decorated. The design works at architectural scale, repeating every 104 centimetres up the piece and 68 centimetres across, which on a 136 centimetre width means roughly two of the design side by side and little else. At that size the geometry reads as structure rather than surface pattern. The ground is 80% cotton, so the hand is dry and firm with no drape to speak of until it is made up, and the acrylic gives the figure enough body to stand proud. Flat it is graphic; gathered it breaks into something closer to pleating.

The composition is 80% CO cotton and 20% PC acrylic, woven to a 136 centimetre width, with a 104 centimetre vertical repeat and a 68 centimetre horizontal repeat. No Martindale figure is published for this cloth, so we would specify it for curtains, blinds and cushions rather than seating. There are nine colourways. Amber and Brick take it warm, Evergreen and Combat into utility greens, Gris is the cool neutral, and Cream, Flax, Clay and Desert cover the earthier ground between.

Fold wants flat treatments. A roman blind is the best use of it, because the design stays legible and the folds echo the geometry instead of fighting it. Wide panels on a track work too, provided they stack back clear of the glass. We also use it for large square cushions on plain seating. Keep the rest of the scheme quiet. The repeat is the thing to plan around. At 104 centimetres vertically you must allow a full extra repeat on every drop, and on a tall window that adds up, so get quantities calculated before you commit. The 68 centimetre horizontal repeat means joined widths need matching across the seam; ask for the design to be centred on the blind and let the excess fall at the outer edges. A blackout lining keeps the geometry crisp.
