Folie is one of Lizzo's long-standing designs, an embroidered satin brought back into the Echo collection with three new colours alongside the original three. Abstract flowers are stitched onto a smooth cotton and viscose satin ground, so the motif sits slightly proud of the surface and the thread catches the light differently from the cloth beneath it. The drawing is loose and painterly rather than botanical, and the scale is generous, with a repeat of 65 centimetres.
The ground is 60 per cent cotton and 40 per cent viscose, at 380 grams per square metre on a 136 centimetre width, with a 65 centimetre vertical and 70 centimetre horizontal repeat. It carries a Martindale rating of 20,000 rubs, which is enough for cushions and occasional chairs but not for a sofa, and Lizzo lists it for curtains and lighter decorative work. There are six numbered colourways, and the combination of a satin ground and coloured stitching gives each number a two-tone quality; order by number.
We use Folie for curtains in a bedroom or drawing room, lined so the embroidery is seen against a solid backing, and for large cushions on a plain sofa where the flowers can be centred. A single occasional chair or a headboard is as far as we would take it on furniture. It sits happily with plain velvets and wools and gives a quiet scheme its one decorative note. Allow one full repeat per drop for matching, and ask your curtain maker to centre the motif on each curtain and to match the pair at the leading edges. The embroidery should be pressed from the back over a soft cloth, never face down, and the satin ground marks if it is folded hard, so store it rolled. Hand wash at up to 40 degrees or dry clean; do not tumble dry.
