Lizzo | Fontaine

Fontaine is a reversible curtain cloth from Lizzo's Les Jardins collection, woven in cotton, cupro and linen with a fine vertical line running through it. One face is matt and the other is satin, and the line is drawn by the contrast between them, so the cloth has two finished sides and can be hung with either face to the room. The cupro gives it a cool, fluid drape and a quiet sheen; the linen and cotton keep it grounded.

The composition is 48 per cent cotton, 31 per cent cupro and 21 per cent linen, at 450 grams per square metre on a 305 centimetre width, woven to be used turned with the width as the drop, so the line runs vertically in the finished curtain. There is no repeat to match, and no rub-test figure, as it is made for curtains and cushions rather than seating. Four numbered colourways are offered, in a restrained, tonal palette; order by number.

We use Fontaine for full-height curtains in a dining room or study, unlined so both faces are seen, or lined where blackout is wanted. It is also a good cloth for a tailored roman blind, where the stripe keeps the folds crisp, and for a pair of oversized cushions. It sits well with plain velvets and with the wool on the sofa. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Because it is railroaded, buy the width of the window rather than the drop: a window 3 metres wide at double fullness needs about 6 metres, and drops to roughly 2.9 metres finished need no horizontal join. Decide which face goes to the room before cutting, and keep it consistent across the pair. It is a heavy cloth for a curtain, so use a sturdy track. It can be washed at 30 degrees on a mild cycle; we would dry clean once made up.
