Mark Alexander | Facet Wallcovering

Facet is printed onto grasscloth, so you get a drawn pattern sitting on a real woven texture: the ink catches the raised strands and skips the hollows, which gives the design a broken, slightly worn edge you cannot get on a smooth paper. The drawing is an angular, faceted geometry at a moderate scale, open enough to let the grasscloth beneath it stay visible. The result is a pattern with a little wear built into it from the start.

Each roll is 91 centimetres wide and 7.32 metres long, with a 70 centimetre vertical repeat. Six colourways: Alabaster, Shell and Parchment through the pale neutrals, Chestnut in the warm browns, and Lake and Ocean in blue. Because the ground is a natural grasscloth, colour varies from panel to panel and the print sits differently on each strand. Both are inherent to the material and should be allowed for.

We use Facet where a room needs a pattern with a hand to it: a dining room, a study, the wall behind a bed. Kept to one wall it reads as a piece of work; taken around a room it becomes a texture. Pair it with plain linen curtains, painted joinery and a wool floor. Because the repeat is modest, it does not need a large wall to make sense. Order a sample to see it in your own light.

Hang paste-the-wall, matching the 70 centimetre repeat at each seam and allowing extra length for the matching loss. Keep paste off the face, as a printed grasscloth marks twice over, once on the fibre and once on the ink. Order all rolls at once and check the batch number on every label. Trim with a sharp blade and change it often. Add one spare roll for trimming and for any future repair.
