Adlina is a woven wool and rayon texture from the Modern Country Weaves book, a soft, broken jacquard rather than a flat plain, with a subtle all-over motif that shows itself as a change in surface rather than a clear picture. The rayon lifts the wool with a little extra lustre and drape, so the cloth reads as a decorative weave without tipping into a bold pattern. It is a cloth built to sit quietly under other things, closer in spirit to a fine flannel than to a showy jacquard, the sort of cloth you notice only once you are sitting on it.

The composition is 75 per cent wool and 25 per cent rayon. It is 140 centimetres wide with a 25 centimetre vertical repeat and a 35 centimetre horizontal one. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There is one colourway, Indigo, a deep, workable blue that behaves close to a neutral against almost any other pattern in a scheme.

We would use it for curtains in a sitting room with a plaid on the chairs, or upholster a sofa in it where the walls or the curtains are already carrying the pattern in a room. A bedspread in it, with a wool blanket folded at the foot, makes a calm, textural bed. It also upholsters a window seat well. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: the woven texture repeats finely enough that you can order much as you would a plain, though check the direction of the weave runs consistently across joined widths on a sofa. Line curtains for body. Dry clean only, and avoid heavy steaming, which can flatten the texture.
