Awning Stripe is a woven stripe in cotton and jute, the kind of cloth that used to shade a shopfront or a garden terrace, brought indoors and refined a little. The jute gives it a dry, slightly rustic texture and a visible slub, and the stripe is woven into the cloth rather than printed on, so it is the same on both faces. It is a useful cloth: it brings order to a room full of florals and gives a plain scheme something to hold on to.
The composition is 80 per cent cotton and 20 per cent jute, the width 136 centimetres, and the stripe runs down the length with a 17 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are five colourways: Indigo, Espresso, Teal, Green and Ochre, each a single colour against a natural ground, which makes them easy to pull out of the florals in the collection. Ochre is the warm one; Indigo is the safe one.
We use stripes like this on the pieces that get used: a bench cushion in a hall, a footstool, the outside back of a chair whose front is in a floral, or a Roman blind in a kitchen or bathroom. It is also good as a simple unlined curtain in a summer bedroom. Pair it with Garden Party or Mulberry Garden in a matching colour. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Stripes are unforgiving of poor cutting, so ask your maker to cut on the stripe rather than the selvedge and to match across seams and on any joins. For a Roman blind, centre the stripe on the width. Jute can shrink a little, so have it dry cleaned rather than washed, and avoid steam on the face.
