Barrington Stripe is a woven cotton and jute stripe, named for a Somerset village and built with the same dry, slightly rustic hand as the house's other jute-blend cloths. The stripe is woven into the cloth rather than printed, so it is identical on both faces, and the jute content gives it a visible slub that a pure cotton stripe never has. It is a working stripe, the kind we use on furniture that earns its keep. Somerset gives its name to several of the Westerly Stripes, and this is the one with the most texture worked into the weave itself.
The composition is 65 per cent cotton and 35 per cent jute. It is 130 centimetres wide with a 13 centimetre horizontal repeat and no vertical repeat, since the stripe runs the length of the cloth. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There is one colourway, Indigo/Red, a crisp, workable combination with genuine wear to it.
We would put it on a bench cushion in a hall, a footstool, or the outside back of a chair whose front carries a floral. As curtains it makes a good, unfussy choice for a kitchen or a boot room. Pair it with one of the Country Walk prints in a related colour. A pair of curtains in a garden room, left unlined, lets the jute slub show at its best against the light. A making-up note: ask your maker to cut on the stripe rather than the selvedge, and to match it across any seam, which is where a woven stripe is judged. Jute can shrink slightly, so have it dry cleaned rather than washed, and avoid steam directly on the face, which can flatten the slub.
