Basketweave is one of Mulberry's Small Prints, a neat geometric print that mimics the interlaced look of a woven basket without actually being woven, printed at a small, even scale onto a plain cotton ground. It belongs to a collection built on small, characterful motifs with a bohemian, slightly loose hand, and this is the most textural and architectural design of the group, closer to a piece of caning than a conventional print.

The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 137 centimetres wide, with a 12 centimetre vertical repeat and a 16 centimetre horizontal one. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are six colourways: Blue, Teal and Emerald are the cooler options; Linen is the palest and most neutral; and Ochre and Russet bring real warmth, the closest of the range to an actual woven basket's own colouring. Linen and Russet are the two we place most often, since both read as quiet neutrals from across a room.

We use a small geometric like this behind a bigger floral, on a set of dining or kitchen chairs, or on a pair of bedroom chairs where a large pattern would compete too much with the walls. It also makes a good lining for curtains in a heavier Mulberry print, or a run of cushions on a plain linen sofa. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: with a repeat this small, estimate quantities much as you would for a plain, though it is still worth matching carefully across any visible seam, since a geometric shows misalignment more readily than a floral. On upholstery, keep the weave direction consistent across a set of chairs so the basketweave reads evenly. It must be dry cleaned, and never ironed directly on the face.
