Beauly is a plain wool cloth, the kind of fabric a room needs before you add anything else to it: no repeat, no print, just an even, felted surface with the dry, slightly nubbly hand wool has when it is woven this way. It is 150 centimetres wide, which is generous for a wool and useful for railroading. It is the sort of cloth we reach for when a scheme has too much pattern already and needs somewhere for the eye to rest.

The composition is 100 per cent wool. At 150 centimetres wide it is wider than most of the collection's prints, and it is tested to 20,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, so it is sound for general domestic upholstery as well as curtains. Three colourways: Granite is a cool, stony grey; Soft Lovat is a muted, heathery green; and Amber is the warm one, closer to a burnt gold than a bright yellow.

We would put it on a sofa or a pair of wing chairs where a floral has already done the talking on the curtains, or hang it as plain curtains in a study alongside a plaid on the seating. It also makes a good, sturdy bedspread. Pair Granite with Somerset Check, or Amber with one of the Bruton stripes. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: with no repeat to match, estimate quantities as you would any plain, though wool has some give, so avoid pulling it taut over a frame. At 150 centimetres it railroads well for a run of seating, saving joins across a wide sofa back. Have it dry cleaned only, and keep it out of strong sun, which will fade a plain wool faster than a print.
