Beauly is the plain in the collection, a textured paper that takes its name and its look from Mulberry's wool cloth of the same name, so the wall reads as a soft, felted plain rather than a flat painted surface. There is no pattern to speak of, only a fine, even texture that catches the light and gives the colour depth. It is printed on a non-woven paper, and it is the quiet foundation that lets the florals and plaids in the collection do their work.
The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 52 centimetres wide, with no pattern repeat to match. There are nine colourways in total: the pale, warm neutrals Plaster, Parchment, Stone and Sandstone; the deep Espresso and the warm Russet; and three soft colours, Aqua, Lovat and Pale Straw. Stone and Parchment are the ones we would use across most of a house; Espresso is for a study or a dining room that is used mostly at night.
We use a paper like this on all four walls of a sitting room or a bedroom where the curtains carry the pattern, on the walls of a study with a plaid on the chairs, or as the plain partner to Garden Party or Mulberry Garden on the opposite wall of a dining room. It is also a good paper behind a gallery of pictures. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Hanging note: as a non-woven paper it is normally pasted to the wall and hung dry; check the leaflet in the roll for the paste instruction and, because it is a plain, reverse alternate drops only if the leaflet tells you to. With no repeat, a standard 10 metre roll gives four drops at 2.4 metres, so a 4 metre wall takes two rolls, and every roll should come from one batch to avoid shading.
