Beaumaris is a woven wool check named for the Welsh castle, close and even in scale at 32 by 19 centimetres, with the slightly irregular, heathered colour a pure wool yarn gives a check that an acrylic blend never quite manages. It has real weight and body, closer to an estate tweed than a lightweight furnishing check, and it is one of the most textural cloths in the Wools group, good to handle as well as to look at.

It is 100 per cent wool, 150 centimetres wide, with a 32 centimetre vertical repeat and a 19 centimetre horizontal one, and it is recommended for curtains and both loose and fixed upholstery. There are four colourways: Granite/Blue, cool and architectural; Russet/Gold, warm with a gilded thread; Russet, a single deep rust; and Red/Green, the most traditional of the four. Russet is the one we would choose for a study with old leather in it.

We would put Beaumaris on a wing chair, a footstool or a window seat in a study or a hall, where its weight and heather make it feel substantial underfoot as well as to the touch. A pair of curtains in it gives a room real warmth in winter, and it wears well on a piece of furniture that earns its keep every day. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: pure wool has more give than a blended cloth, so ask your upholsterer to handle it accordingly and to keep the check set square on any seat or back panel. Allow a little extra for matching a check this size across a pair of curtains. Dry clean only, never washed.
