Braemar takes its name from the Highland Games village, and it is a small, close woven check, a proper Scottish tweed with the grid worked fine enough that it reads as texture rather than pattern from more than a few feet away. The wool has the dry, slightly nubbly hand of an estate cloth, and the colours are heathered rather than flat, giving the check a mottled, lived-in quality even when new. The Highland Games the village is named for are as much about spectacle as sport, and there is a similar quiet confidence to this cloth, understated until you look closely at the weave.

The composition is 100 per cent wool, 150 centimetres wide, with a 31 centimetre vertical repeat and a 25 centimetre horizontal one, tested to 20,000 rubs on the Martindale scale. Five colourways: Woodsmoke is a soft, smoky grey; Blue and Teal are the cooler options; Fawn and Russet are the warm, tan-and-tobacco pairings. Woodsmoke is the one we reach for most, since it sits under almost anything.

We would put this on a wing chair or a club sofa in a study or a hall, or hang it as curtains in a snug with a leather chair. It also makes a good bedspread. Pair it with Harlech or Lindisfarne Plaid for a room with real Highland character. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: a small check like this can be ordered much as you would a plain, but ask your upholsterer to keep the grid running true across any seam. At 150 centimetres it railroads well for a wide sofa back. Dry clean only, and avoid direct sun, which fades a wool check faster than a print.
