Breezy Stripe is a narrow, printed cotton stripe from the Westerly Stripes collection, light enough in feel to justify the name, with a soft, slightly uneven edge to each band that keeps it from looking mechanical. It is a plain cotton ground rather than a union cloth, so the hand is dry and the colour sits crisply on the surface. It is the kind of stripe that calms a room down rather than adding to the noise, which is why we reach for it so often as a supporting cloth.
It is 100 per cent cotton, 134 centimetres wide, with an 11 centimetre vertical repeat and a 19 centimetre horizontal one setting the width of the stripe. It is recommended for curtains and both loose and fixed upholstery. There is one colourway, Blue/Red, a crisp combination that reads as more nautical than floral, and which sits well against white paintwork or a scrubbed pine table.
We would use it for a pair of curtains in a boy's bedroom or a boot room, on a window seat cushion, or as the outside back of a chair whose front carries a Mulberry floral. It is also a good, simple Roman blind for a bathroom, and an easy cloth to run along a landing or a stair runner's border. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A making-up note: a stripe this narrow is forgiving to match, but still ask your maker to keep it running true along the selvedge and to align it across any seam. Line curtains for the best drop and a cleaner silhouette against the light, and have the cloth dry cleaned rather than washed.
