Brighton Stripe is a fine, printed stripe on a plain cotton ground, narrow bands with a soft, slightly broken edge rather than the crispness of a woven ticking. The name places it on the English coast rather than in the shires, and it has something of that seaside, striped-awning cheerfulness about it. It is a useful, calming cloth in a house that already has pattern elsewhere, and one we turn to precisely because it asks so little of a room.
It is 100 per cent cotton, 135 centimetres wide, with a fine 2 centimetre vertical repeat and a 27 centimetre horizontal one setting the stripe's width. Tested to 25,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it is recommended for curtains and both loose and fixed upholstery. There is one colourway, Indigo/Linen, a deep blue stripe against a pale, linen-toned ground that works equally well in a coastal house or an inland one, and reads as crisp rather than a nautical cliche.
We use fine stripes like this on kitchen chairs, a window seat, or as an unlined curtain in a bathroom or a child's room, where its narrow, even rhythm is easy to live with. It also pairs well with one of the Country Walk florals on a cushion, or lines the inside of a wardrobe door for a small, unexpected detail. A making-up note: because the stripe is fine and even, matching is straightforward, but ask your maker to keep the stripe running true along the selvedge on every width so the join stays invisible. Line curtains for a cleaner fall against the light, and dry clean rather than wash, to keep the blue from softening.
