Bruton Check is the smallest and the toughest of the Bruton checks, a neat woven check in a wool-led blend with a 21 by 22.5 centimetre repeat, so it reads as a texture from across the room and as a proper check close to. The wool and viscose give it a soft, slightly heathered surface; the cotton, linen and nylon give it body and wear. It is the cloth in the collection we would put on the chair that gets sat in every evening.

The composition is 38 per cent wool, 24 per cent viscose, 15 per cent cotton, 8 per cent nylon, 7 per cent linen, 7 per cent polyester and 1 per cent acrylic. It is 135 centimetres wide, tested to 31,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, and recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are four colourways: Nutmeg, Teal, Green and Ochre, each a single colour worked with a lighter yarn. Nutmeg is the quiet, useful one; Green is the country one.

We use it on club chairs and wing chairs, on an ottoman that doubles as a table, and on the outside backs and arms of a sofa fronted in one of the Garden Party florals. It is also a good curtain cloth for a study or a boot room, unfussy and warm. It pairs with the Shetland Plaid paper or a plain wool on the walls. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: a small check still has to be set square, so ask your upholsterer to centre it on the inside back and seat and to match across the front border, allowing a little extra for that. It takes piping well, cut on the straight. Wool blends respond to a light steam from the reverse, but the cloth must be dry cleaned rather than washed.
