Chart Stripe is a fine printed stripe from the Westerly Stripes book, cotton and linen rather than pure cotton, which gives it a slightly drier, crisper hand than some of its siblings in the same collection. The stripe is close-set and even, and the linen content keeps the ground from ever looking too smooth or too new. Being printed rather than woven keeps the cloth lighter and more supple than a jacquard stripe of the same width, which suits it to a softer, more gathered curtain heading.
The composition is 55 per cent cotton and 45 per cent linen, 138 centimetres wide, with a 9 centimetre vertical repeat and an 11.5 centimetre horizontal one. It is recommended for curtains and upholstery. There is one colourway, Blue, a clean, mid-toned blue on a natural ground that works equally well as a quiet neutral or as the coolest note in a warmer scheme, from a crisp coastal look to a softer country one.
We use it for curtains in a bedroom or a landing, or on dining chairs where a fine stripe wears well and shows the dirt less than a plain. It also makes a good Roman blind in a kitchen or bathroom. Pair it with a plain linen or one of Mulberry's small florals. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Ask your maker to cut on the stripe rather than the selvedge, and to match it carefully across any seam, particularly on a pair of curtains hung close together. The linen content means it will crease more readily than a pure cotton, so avoid packing it tightly before it is made up. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron.
