Claremont is a plain-weave texture from the Modern Country Weaves group, a linen and wool cloth with enough structure in it to read as more than a flat plain without ever becoming a pattern in its own right. The wool gives it body and a faint tweed-like depth; the linen keeps it light enough for curtains as well as a chair. It is the kind of fabric that sits happily beside a check or a print without competing with it, which is what a modern country scheme relies on.
The composition is 55 per cent linen and 45 per cent wool, 140 centimetres wide, with a 20 centimetre horizontal repeat in the weave structure and no directional pattern to match. It is recommended for curtains and both loose and fixed upholstery. There is one colourway, Soft Teal, a muted, chalky blue-green that behaves almost like a neutral against wood, stone or a stronger colour elsewhere in the room.
We use a cloth like Claremont on the pieces that need to recede: the outside back and arms of a sofa fronted in a check, or a pair of curtains in a room where a Country Walk print is doing the work on a chair. It is also a straightforward choice for a window seat cushion or a simple Roman blind in a book-lined study. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A making-up note: because there is no repeat to match across the width, estimate it as you would a plain, though the wool content means a little extra care in cutting so the weave runs true. Wool blends can take a light steam from the reverse but should always be dry cleaned rather than washed.
