Cliff Stripe is a plain, even stripe printed on cotton, part of the Westerly Stripes group Mulberry builds around the coast rather than the garden. The bands run down the length of the cloth and repeat every 19 centimetres across the width, a mid-weight stripe, neither a narrow ticking nor a broad awning band. The 100 per cent cotton ground is dry and matt, and the printed edge keeps the stripe soft rather than ruled.
The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 136 centimetres wide, with a 19 centimetre horizontal repeat; because the stripe runs the length of the cloth there is no vertical repeat to match. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There is one colourway, Indigo, a deep, workable blue on a natural ground that sits happily against almost any other colour in the house.
We would hang it as curtains in a hall or a boy's bedroom, or railroad it for a window seat or an ottoman where the stripe can run vertically. It is also a useful cloth for the outside back and arms of a chair whose front carries a floral. Pair it with one of the Bohemian Travels prints or a plain linen. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A making-up note: railroading a 136 centimetre cloth turns the drop into the width, so a vertical stripe at a window is limited to around 130 centimetres finished before a seam is needed. On upholstery, ask your maker to match the stripe across any seam, which is where a stripe is judged. Line curtains, and have it dry cleaned rather than washed.
