Compass Stripe is another of the fine, coastal-inspired lines in Westerly Stripes, a narrow band printed down a plain cotton ground with a 3 centimetre repeat, close enough to read as a fine ticking rather than a bold stripe. Where Shoreham keeps to a single colourway, Compass Stripe comes in three, which makes it the more flexible of the two when a scheme needs matching rather than a single accent.

The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 135 centimetres wide, with the stripe repeating every 3 centimetres across the width and no vertical repeat to match. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are three colourways: Indigo, the deepest and most versatile; Blue, a fresher, lighter tone; and Red, the only warm option of the three, useful for pulling a red out of a floral elsewhere in a room.

We use a fine stripe like this on the outside back and arms of an upholstered chair, on a set of dining or kitchen chairs, or as an unlined curtain in a hall or a child's room. Red is a good choice for a piped edge on a plain linen cushion; Indigo works almost anywhere a neutral with a little life is wanted. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: because the repeat is so fine you can estimate quantities as you would a plain, but still cut on the stripe rather than the selvedge, since the smallest wander shows at this scale. On upholstery, keep the line running vertically and centred on the seat and inside back. It must be dry cleaned, and kept away from anywhere splashes are routine.
