Constantine Linen carries one of the large-flowered designs from Grandiflora II, Mulberry's collection of big, generous botanicals, printed on a linen-rich ground with just enough viscose to soften the fall. The scale is properly grand, with a 75 centimetre repeat, so a single bloom can fill a cushion front, and the drawing has the loose, confident hand of a botanical study rather than a tight, workmanlike repeat. It wants a tall window or a full bed to show itself properly.

The composition is 58 per cent linen and 42 per cent viscose, which gives the linen's dry, matt surface a softer fall than a pure linen would have. It is 130 centimetres wide, with a 75 centimetre vertical repeat and a 65 centimetre horizontal one, and the page recommends it for curtains and bedspreads rather than seating, so we treat it as a hanging cloth rather than an upholstery one. There is one colourway, Sage/Gold, a soft grey-green ground with the flowers picked out in warm gold, gentle in a north-facing room and glowing by lamplight.

We would hang it as full-length curtains in a principal bedroom, interlined so the pattern has proper body, or use it as a grand bedspread with the pillows in a plain linen. It also makes a fine bed canopy in a room where the bed is the whole point. Pair it with a plain wool or a fine check rather than another print. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: with a 75 centimetre repeat, allow a full extra repeat per drop and ask your maker to centre a complete bloom just below the heading and again at the hem. Because it is not recommended for seating, keep it off anything sat on daily; a valance or a headboard is a safer home for it than a chair. It must be dry cleaned professionally, never washed or ironed on the face.
