Cothay Stripe is a broad, printed stripe on a plain cotton ground, named for a Somerset manor and in the tradition of the awning and deckchair stripes English houses bring out in summer. The stripe runs down the length of the cloth with a 27 centimetre horizontal repeat, which makes it a wide, confident stripe rather than a ticking. The cotton ground is dry and smooth, and the printed edge gives the bands a softness a woven stripe never quite achieves.

The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 135 centimetres wide, tested to 22,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, and recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. It comes in one colourway, Espresso, a deep brown on a natural ground that behaves like a neutral and sits with every colour in the collection. It is the stripe we would use to give a floral scheme some spine, and it is equally at home on its own in a study or a hall.

We would put it on a pair of curtains in a boot room or a passage, on the seats of kitchen chairs, or on a bench cushion in a hall. A stool or an ottoman upholstered in it beside a Garden Party sofa is a good pairing, and it makes a smart Roman blind in a bathroom. A making-up note: with a stripe this wide, the placement matters. Ask your maker to centre a stripe on each curtain and to match the stripe across the leading edges of the pair; on upholstery, keep the stripe running vertically and centred on the seat, and allow a little extra cloth for that. Line curtains, and have it dry cleaned rather than washed.
