Croft is a sophisticated herringbone, one of four decorative weaves in Mulberry's Croft Weaves collection that are built to coordinate with every fabric and wallpaper the house makes. The herringbone zigzag is woven rather than printed, so the pattern is the same on both faces and the surface has the slight ridge and sheen typical of a proper broken-twill weave. It is a texture cloth first, a colour second, which is exactly why it works alongside almost anything.

The composition is 39 per cent viscose, 23 per cent cotton, 20 per cent linen, 14 per cent polyester and 4 per cent wool. It is 140 centimetres wide with a 26 centimetre vertical repeat and a fine 1.4 centimetre horizontal one, tested to 25,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, and recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Five colourways: Charcoal and Blue are the safe neutrals, Aqua and Ochre bring some colour, and Red is the one with the most warmth.

We use herringbones like this on a sofa or an armchair that needs to sit quietly beneath a floral cushion, or as curtains in a room where the walls already carry the pattern. It is also a natural companion to the other Croft Weaves, Seaton, Felbrigg and Monroe, mixed on different pieces in the same scheme. A making-up note: the herringbone repeats so finely along the width that you can treat it as a plain for estimating, though it is worth checking the direction of the zigzag runs the same way across joined widths on a sofa back. Line curtains for body, and have it dry cleaned rather than washed, since the viscose content will not take water well.
