Dalton Stripe is a woven cotton and jute stripe from Mulberry's Bohemian Travels book, the sort of cloth that used to shade a market stall and has been brought indoors and given a more considered, more grown-up palette. The jute gives it a dry, slightly rustic texture and a visible slub, and because the stripe is woven rather than printed, it looks the same from both sides of the cloth, which matters on a blind or a loose cushion cover that gets turned.

The composition is 60 per cent cotton and 40 per cent jute, the width 137 centimetres, with a 23 centimetre horizontal repeat running down the length of the cloth. It is recommended for curtains and upholstery, with enough cloth in hand for a bedspread too. There are three colourways: Charcoal/Bronze is the most sophisticated and the one we reach for first, Indigo/Ochre the most graphic, and Spice/Plum the warmest, each pairing a dark ground with a lighter, contrasting stripe.

We use a stripe like this on the pieces that take daily wear: a window seat, a footstool, the outside back of a chair whose front is in a floral, or a Roman blind in a kitchen or a boot room. It also makes an easy unlined curtain in a summer bedroom. Pair it with one of Mulberry's Bohemian prints in a matching colour, or with a plain wool. Stripes are unforgiving of careless cutting, so ask your maker to cut on the stripe rather than the selvedge and to match it across any seam or join, particularly on a pair of curtains. Jute can shrink slightly in damp conditions, so have it dry cleaned rather than washed, and avoid steaming directly on the face of the cloth.
