Dalwhinnie takes its name from the Highland village and distillery, and its woven check has something of a tartan about it, laid out in irregular, unequal bands rather than a formal, symmetrical Scotch check, for Mulberry's Country Walk collection. The linen content keeps it from ever looking too neat or too new, and the weave itself carries the pattern rather than a printed line on top. Seen from across a room it reads as a soft, multicoloured texture rather than a defined check, only resolving into distinct bands on closer inspection.

The composition is 72 per cent linen and 28 per cent acrylic, which gives the cloth body without the full weight of a pure wool tartan. It is 132 centimetres wide, with a 64 centimetre vertical repeat and a 66 centimetre horizontal one. It is recommended for curtains. There is one colourway, Multi, combining several muted, heathery tones rather than a single strong contrast, so it reads as a soft blend from across a room.

We would use it as curtains in a study, a hallway or a bedroom that wants a Highland, country-house feel without a literal tartan. It sits well alongside a plain linen or wool pulled from one of its quieter tones, or against one of Mulberry's smaller checks. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Ask your maker to centre the check on any visible panel and to keep the lines square across a pair of curtains, since an off-square check is more noticeable than an off-square stripe. The linen content means it will crease more readily than a synthetic-rich cloth, so avoid packing it tightly before it is made up. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron.
