Delaney Stripe belongs to Mulberry's Rossini Velvet collection, a fine ribbed velvet with narrow bands of pile alternating with a flatter, satin-like ground rather than an all-over cut pile. The effect is a subtle, self-coloured stripe that depends on light and shadow rather than contrasting colour, so it reads as texture first and pattern second, shifting as you move past it or run a hand across the surface. The design takes its name from the fine, delicate line each rib traces across the cloth, more like a drawn line than a printed one.

The composition is 57 per cent viscose and 43 per cent cotton, which gives the pile its sheen and drape. It is 137 centimetres wide, with an 11 centimetre horizontal repeat, and tested to 8,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, so it suits curtains and light, occasional-use upholstery rather than a sofa in daily use. There is one colourway, Plum, a deep, wine-dark purple that reads as almost black in low light and glows when it catches the sun. At 137 centimetres, it is wide enough for most standard drops without an extra join.

We would use it as curtains in a bedroom or a drawing room where the ribbing catches the light as the fabric moves, or on a headboard or a single chair that is not going to see hard daily wear. It pairs well with a plain wool or a fine stripe in a lighter tone, letting the velvet's own texture do the work. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
