Drummond takes a Scottish clan name for a design that is really part of Mulberry's more eclectic Bohemian Travels range, a soft woven check in a viscose-rich blend rather than a literal tartan. The viscose gives the surface a gentle sheen and a fluid drape; the cotton keeps it grounded, and the polyester adds a little resilience. It reads as a check from across the room and as a texture with real depth once you are close to it.

The composition is 48 per cent viscose, 32 per cent cotton and 20 per cent polyester. It is 135 centimetres wide; no fixed repeat is recorded for this design. Tested to 25,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it is suitable for curtains and general upholstery as well as bedspreads. There is one colourway, Spice, a warm, spiced orange over a pale neutral ground, easy enough to behave like a neutral itself once it is in a room with other colour in it.

We would put this on an armchair or a sofa in a room that wants warmth without a strong pattern, or use it for curtains in a study or a snug where the colour can carry the room on its own. It pairs well with a plain linen or a darker check, and it is a good foil for a floral elsewhere in the scheme. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: because there is no fixed repeat to match, treat it much as you would a plain when estimating quantity, though it is worth asking your maker to balance the texture evenly across a pair of curtains or a sofa front.
