Eastwind Stripe is a printed cotton stripe from Mulberry's Westerly Stripes book, a crisp, close-set band of colour on a plain ground that reads more like a smart shirting than a curtain fabric, which is exactly its charm. The printing keeps the edges of the stripe a little softer than a woven version would, and the scale is small enough to use generously through a room without it ever taking over.

It is a 100 per cent cotton cloth, 136 centimetres wide, with an 8 centimetre vertical repeat and a 23 centimetre horizontal one, so the stripe sits at a genuinely close, even scale. It is recommended for curtains and upholstery, and there is enough cloth in the repeat for a bedspread as well. There is one colourway, Indigo/Red, a workmanlike navy stripe on a warm red ground that we find easy to place against old wood, brass fittings or a plain stone floor.

We would use it for curtains in a study or a boy's bedroom, or railroaded across a window seat or an ottoman, where the close stripe reads as tailored rather than busy. It also makes a smart bench cushion in a hall or a boot room. Pair it with a plain linen or a small Mulberry sprig print rather than another stripe. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

For a true vertical stripe at the window, ask your maker to centre a full band on each curtain and to match the stripe across the pair at eye level. On upholstery, line up the stripe across any seam, which is where the eye finds it first, and allow a little extra cloth for that matching. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron.
