End Paper takes its name from the marbled sheets bound into the front and back of an old book, and the print does something similar on cloth: soft, swirled bands of colour on a pure linen ground, more abstract than any of the florals in the Country Walk collection. It has an unusual, slightly bookish elegance, the kind of pattern you would expect to find lining the inside of a good library rather than on a curtain.
The cloth is 100 per cent linen, 134 centimetres wide, with a 45 centimetre vertical repeat and a 67 centimetre horizontal one, and it is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Two colourways: Blue/Sand pairs a soft marbled blue with a warm neutral, closest to a genuine antique endpaper; Lovat is a single tweedy green, quieter and more contemporary. Blue/Sand is the one we specify for a library or a study, where the reference is most at home.
We would use it for curtains in a library, a study or a hallway lined with books, or as a bedspread with plain linen sheets. It also makes an unusual lining for a curtain in a plainer fabric, so the marbled pattern only shows at the leading edge. Pair it with a plain wool or a leather chair. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A making-up note: allow one 45 centimetre repeat per drop for matching, and treat the swirled motif as you would a marble print, balancing it by eye across a pair of curtains rather than forcing a rigid match. Pure linen moves with humidity, so allow extra in the hem. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron.
