End Paper Velvet takes its name from the decorative endpapers found inside old hardback books, and translates that kind of small, dense botanical print onto a cotton velvet for Mulberry's Country Walk collection. The pattern is a scatter of leaves and sprigs printed onto the pile rather than woven into it, so it has the depth of a velvet with the graphic clarity of a print, and the sort of quiet detail that rewards a closer look.
The composition is 88 per cent cotton and 12 per cent polyester, 128 centimetres wide, with a 46 centimetre vertical repeat and a 64 centimetre horizontal one. It is recommended for curtains and upholstery. There are three colourways: Teal is the coolest and most botanical, Teal/Spice adds a warm contrast to the same ground, and Red/Green is the most traditional, closer to a library palette than a summer one.
We would use it on a single upholstered chair, a footstool or the outside back of a sofa fronted in a plainer velvet, or as curtains in a study or library that wants the feel of an old, well-loved room. It pairs naturally with a plain wool or linen in one of its own colours. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Printed velvets need a little more care in the making up than a woven one: press only from the reverse, and never with a hot iron directly on the pile, or the print can flatten. Allow a full repeat per drop for curtains, and ask your upholsterer to brush the pile in one direction across a whole piece of furniture. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron.
