Fairfield Paisley is the woven counterpart to Mulberry's printed paisleys, the same curling motif worked into a linen and wool jacquard rather than printed flat, so the pattern has real texture and catches the light differently from every angle. The linen keeps the hand dry and crisp; the wool adds a little softness and warmth, and together they give the paisley a more textural, less graphic character than a print of the same design.

The composition is 70 per cent linen and 30 per cent wool. It is 158 centimetres wide, with a 43 centimetre vertical repeat and a 39.5 centimetre horizontal one. Tested to 20,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There is one colourway, Sand, a warm, pale neutral with paler, cream-toned highlights where the weave catches the light, letting the woven texture of the paisley do the work rather than relying on colour contrast.

We would use it for curtains in a study or a drawing room where a printed paisley would feel too bold, or on a pair of armchairs either side of a fireplace. Because it is woven rather than printed, it also railroads well for a pelmet or a headboard. Pair it with a plain velvet or one of the Bruton weaves. A making-up note: allow one full 43 centimetre repeat per drop for matching, and note that the width, at 158 centimetres, is wider than most of Mulberry's cloths, which is worth checking against your curtain calculations before you order. Wool blends can take a light steam from the reverse but should be dry cleaned, never washed.
